Quilt shop hop in Holland

Seen at/gezien bij 'De Schapekop' quiltshop in Nieuwpoort
Seen at/gezien bij de Provence in Schoonhoven

Together with my friend Rose-Anne, whose quilt was one of the finalists in Lancaster last week, I went on a quilt shop hop through the Dutch countryside! She happens to be in Holland at the same time!
And of course I had to take pictures from the small pincushions I saw! I could not resist buying typical Dutch fabric called Paapjestof. This is hand printed fabric and comes in stunning colours.
Rose-Anne spoiled me for my birthday with fabric and a book from one of my favorite fabric designers K. Fassett.

And last but not least it is almost April 3rd and there is still time to sign in for the International Pincushion Swap!

Pincushion Give Away!

Both Hilde and I are busy making pincushions and trying out different colour combinations. Did you get started as well? I personally love the pentagons and hexagons, it is so easy to bring along or sewing the parts when watching the telly.

We have made quit a few and are throwing in a GIVE AWAY!
You might think, wait a minute, there are two blogs to sign in so there must be two give away's? Yep, you are right! When you sign up with me you have the chance to win my GIVE AWAY PINCUSHION, and when you sign on with Hilde you can win hers! Mind you, if you sign up with both of us, you have to make two pincushions for 2 other persons! LOL.

I will bring my UFO pincushions in a suitcase to Holland. Tomorrow I is my flight! I am thrilled to go and see my DD, family and friends. It's been only 3 months I am living in São Paulo but I miss them a lot. It will be good to be back on Dutch soil for about two weeks and eat Dutch goodies like stroopwafels and drop!
Setting up a new life in a new country is not always easy. I have to build up a new life, make new friends and feel myself part of a new community. This takes some time. It will be good to go back to my roots for about 2 weeks and reload the battery. But this swap is giving me a lot of fun and by surprise I got connected to the Brazilian quilting community! Thanks to Beth!

The last few days I have been busy with making boxes for different charity events. This Jewelry box is for a Gala event in São Paulo, organized by the International New Comers group. I hope this box will raise some money during the silent auction. The money goes to local charities in São Paulo.

And these boxes are for a Dutch initiative; during an Indonesian Ricetable event, people can buy these boxes and the money goes to an local Dutch charity foundation. A tea-box, a business card box, Delft's Blue and some small bracelets boxes.

Now I better stop writing, start packing my suitcase and buy some souvenirs. Don't forget to sign in for the Pincushion Swap! Just send me an email with your email address and your blog URL if you have one.

Ciao from Brasil! Hilde

Comfort Quilts for Japan

I have seen on different blogs this appeal for comfort quilts for Japan. The original appeal comes from Naomi Ichikawa, the editor of the Japanese quilting magazine "Quilt Tsushin Magazine".
Naomi lives in Tokyo and her mother and brother survived the tsunami in Sendai.

Here is a clear explanation of what is needed and Naomi’s personal request translated into English.

*Comfort Quilts are quilts to ease pain and sadness. In North America, at times of natural disasters or when there is a need in foster facilities, volunteer quilters have had the custom of donating quilts. There are no definite requirements but quilts with warm batting and light stitching are made for both children and adults.
Patchwork Tsushin (link) is asking for donations of any quilt (brand new or in nearly new condition after washing) or any quilt that quilters might take on to make especially for this cause. There are no size requirements but quilts either square or rectangular and at least 100 cm large (approximate 40 inches) would be appreciated. Rather than works of art or quilts for showing, quilts that can and are appropriate for use are necessary. Baby quilts for newborns are especially welcome. Any quilter’s level (beginning and advanced) is appreciated.

Mailing address:
Patchwork Tsushin Co.Ltd
Tohoku Kanto Earthquake Comfort Quilts
〒113-0033 Tokyo, Bunkyoku, Hongo 5-28-3
Telephone 03-3816-5538

Please pack quilts in plastic for handling and send by delivery service. Please assume sending costs as part of your donation. There are no deadlines yet as to when the quilts need to be received but we will update on our website as the situation changes.*

"It is still bad situation now in Japan. We are still nervous about shaking and radiation, but no way to escape. I start to announce to the quilters to send us comfort quilts for the people who are suffered. I would like to do it to the world quilters. We will deliver the comfort quilts to the people who are very difficult situation. Could you please help to announce it to the quilters? We accept any size of quilts (baby to adult). New or unused.
The deadline would be the end of May or later.
I will appreciate if you help me."
Naomi"

Showing off my friends quilt

Rooster Quilt By Rose-Anne de Haan
Today the American Quilters Society quilt show in Lancaster starts and this quilt is one of the finalists! My friend Rose-Anne de Haan made it and I am so proud of her! Because she has no blog herself, I asked her to use this space and tell something more about the quilt.

Rose-Anne: Thanks to you Hilde, I found out about quilting. When we both lived in Singapore you pulled me along to the ANZA quilters group, and from then on I was hooked! When I later moved to Shanghai, I started a quilters group there together with Vreni, who also moved to the same city from Singapore. After 7 years this group is still thriving!

The Rooster applique
And than I landed in Quilters' heaven: the USA. The Rooster's Rose Garden is the result of a block of the month applique class I took in the local quilt shop Quilters Heaven (click). The ladies who took the same class still meet twice a week at my place and we regularly go to workshops, do quilt-shop-hops and are member of several quilters guilds. In total it took me 2 years to finish this quilt and my friend Donna Derstadt quilted it with her longarm machine.

The pattern of this Rooster quilt is based on “Amelia’s Rose Garden” from The Vintage Spool by Verna Mosquera. The rooster is a pattern that I received from one of the ladies of the quilt group in Singapore: “A country Journal, Light Brown Leghorn Rooster” by Maggie Walker. My eldest daughter's name is Amelie, our last name translated to English is Rooster, so this combination of patterns was an easy choice to make.

And now this quilt is chosen as one of the finalist in the AQS show (click). By the way, both the pattern designers have given their permission to show this quilt and Maggie Walker is even coming herself to have a look! I hope to meet her there and than we will take a picture of us together with the quilt!

Dear Rose-Anne, thanks for telling about your quilt! I hope you win a prize today! And when you are back home, you will get started with the Hilde & Hilde pincushion swap as well! ;-D

One night in Rio!

Yes, I went to Rio de Janeiro for only one night to see the Carnival parade of the finalists! This takes place in a special stadium, the so called Sambadrome: a long street with stands on either side. We were lucky to be invited by a company and were able to enjoy the parade from a camerote, with food and drinks... The parade started at 9pm and went on until the wee hours (6am)!

Here are some pictures for you to enjoy!

Geniet!

All the colours were a feast to the eyes! How all the Brazilian enjoyed and danced the samba was just amazing! The next day we walked along the beach and soaked up some energy, enough to get our batteries recharged again!

The top is ready!
See how the light filters through?!
'Only' the quilting needs to be done, but first I need to finish

Another custom tea box

When my Portuguese teacher saw the tea box I showed you some time ago, she got so excited she wanted one too! She quickly went to my room and saw the stash of fabric on my table which is supposed to be added onto my Gecko quilt. "That's what I like!" she cried. Well.., okay.., in the end I am not using it for the quilt, and anyway, if you make something for someone you like, it is more fun to use some of your more precious materials. This morning, after another Portuguese lesson, I could pay the dues with this box! ;-)

This week I went to a Bazaar organized by an international women's group. Here you hear many different languages and I was able speak English, what a relief! I showed the organizing lady this tea box and guess what... I am going to try to get a table for the next bazaar in April! This means I have to start be more productive! I want to make more tea boxes, but a little smaller, a few jewelry boxes with a glass top, some Easter items like chickens out of 2 square blocks etc. I hope it will work out. Maybe you have some suggestions?

We just came back from the hairdresser's!  Don't we look like Brazilian macho's now?

Ciao from Brasil! Hilde

PS: the other project with the 12 triangles from last time is going to be a pincushion. Well, one triangle less it has to be, to make it more of a round shape. I only have to find foam for the filling... pfff another search in the concrete jungle of São Paulo.
