The Harmattan is blowing over the city and leaves behind a layer of dust and fine sand, covering everything. The haze brings in cooler air but the windows have to stay closed to prevent the dust from coming into the house.

Time to pack my suitcases and go back home, to Holland. The past 3 months have been an emotional rollercoaster; there are so many contrasts between rich and poor, in cultures and economy. I will have to find a balance for myself within all of it.

I'm starting to find taking pictures increasingly awkward. Why do I want to document the things I see around me? Do I really want to show the poverty in which some people live? Many don't like to be photographed as it takes away part of their soul. Below is an impression of the last couple of weeks when my kids came to visit us from New York and London. We went to a few different places in Ghana.

Everywhere along the roads people walk with all kinds of items on their heads, even along the highways where cars drive past at high speed.

The colourful fabrics, fruits and flags give colour to the dusty country side.

Holiday preparations in Accra

Christmas decorations in the heat of West Africa
On the streets there are hardly any.
Just a few street stalls in the posh neighborhoods
with some fake trees

Due to the shortage of electricity there are no street lights and for that reason no festive Christmas lights to bring you already into a festive mood

On the other hand, the shopping malls are more Christmassy,
especially the fabric shops Vlisco and GTP!

Christmas fun @ the mall

On Christmas Eve everyone is going to church -all religions-
and they pray, sing and dance until the wee hours

Plastic Christmas trees do not make it into our home, so I used some of the moving boxes instead.
Following the local custom I put together a Christmas gift for our help with amongst others oil, rice, sugar and a nice body lotion

New Years Eve is also celebrated in church,
followed by a boxing match on TV and street parties in the old town
Since a few years fireworks may be sold, which are also known as 'Knock Out'
I believe there are some real KO's amongst here since much of what I see here would be illegal in Europe...

Glass Beads from Ghana

One of the few places you can recycle glass is at the beads factories in Ghana

Glass recycling under the mango tree at TK Beads

There are two ways of making the glass beads. One is where the glass is pounded to powder
which gives the beads an opaque finish. In this process stems of cassava leaves are placed in a mould and cut of with a razor blade on a stick.

The moulds are then filled with powder glass and placed in a wood fired kiln made from anthill clay

When the beads are baked and cooled down they are painted by hand

The other way of making glass beads is with chunks of glass. They are melted in the moulds and the holes are made directly after baking. These beads are transparant

African Stack-and-Whack Dance

African Dance

A few weeks ago I bought my first African fabrics in Ghana
So these are not bought at the Vlisco Factory last week!
With the second piece I started to play

caleidoscoop-achtig effect

With the Stack and Whack technique I cut 6 identical strips of fabric,
Stacked them on top of each other and Whacked them in triangles.
Each set of 6 triangles form an unique kaleidoscope effect for one block

This was the original lay out, but when I had sewn it all together I wasn't happy at all,
for some reason the movement of the kaleidoscope blocks had disappeared

I took it apart and placed the blocks in a different way and added more green
The border fabric is the original print where I made the blocks with
On the 4 corners I appliquéd a 6-point star

Tadaah!

The guys who who work at the compound where we stay holding up the 'African Dance'

When my sewing table is ready, the quilting can begin!

Visit to the Vlisco factory in Ghana

My highlight of last week was a guided tour through the GTP (Ghana Textiles Printing) factory just outside Accra! This factory is part of the Vlisco company in Holland.

The quality of the batiks from GTP is simply the best in Ghana

Most of the cotton used for the batiks are from Ghana

The fabric is washed and bleached in preparation for the dying

The traditional fabric line is still partly done by hand

Before and after:
The fabric in front goes to the front underneath and comes out above after printing

The modern batiks are printed by machine and going through a long process before being cut into pieces of 6 and 12 yards for the market

Whole sale!

Ready to go to the stores!

Yes, I did buy some fabrics!
Lucky me some other ladies wanted to share some of the 6 and 12 yards ;)
