Sunday Best

Last Sunday we passed a colourful church ceremony
in their Sunday best the worshippers sang and danced during part of the service
The women are dressed beautifully!

I hope one day I will be able to take better pictures of women in local dress

Slow Sewing update

This is going to be a colourful project!
Based on Ricky Tims' kaleidoscope. The extra part of 1.5" wide is not yet attached to the top part.

Before I started with this project I drew a 5" square on a piece of paper and divided this in 3 equal parts. It is in fact more practical to use strips from the full width of the fabric, but I only have the fat quarters with me. That's why I started with a smaller square. I still have enough fabric to continue, so on new piece of paper I try to make this design a bit bigger. Not the fastest way of working but this is my 'slow sewing project'!

Sunday at the beach

We went to a small beach just west of Accra
To get there, we had to cross a lagoon by boat

By the seaside of this stretch of beach a village community was pulling in the fishing nets
Everyone helps out and the catch is shared by all

They dig holes to throw in the by-catch they don't need

While the community is at work, this sweet little girl looks after her baby brother

When all the fishing nets are emptied and dried, they are brought away

De touwen opruimen - Clearing the ropes

De netten opruimen - Clearing the nets

After playing in the waves, we refreshed ourselves in this hut and went back home

Slow Sewing Therapy

After taking in all new impressions there is no better cure than playing with fabrics
Just relax and slow down with needle and thread and these Ghanaian Fat Quarters I bought in Birmingham at the Quilt Festival

First I cut 2 sets of strips of different width and sew them together by hand

This project is going slow. In the morning I go out with the car (with driver) to search for goods we need for our apartment. Hopefully we can move in in a week's time
On our way there is always something to see...

Street vendors selling food at traffic lights/jams

Popcorn Lady

Bought a mattress and this helpful man ties it up on top of the roof
I just wonder how old he is...

's Middags weer verder met 'slow sewing'
In the afternoon I continue with 'slow sewing'

I should have put part 2 cross wise for a more interesting effect

Joehoe!

And you know what?!
A sewing friend in Santiago Chile contacted a friend of hers and via this lady I came into contact with an international women's group in Accra and some of them like sewing too!
Another Dutch lady reacted to my blog post from last week and she also lives in Accra and is a quilter as well! Yeah!

Coffee meeting with other foreign ladies

After this coffee morning I went to a shop with all kind of art supplies and they sell cardboard as well! Everything's gonna be alright....

Jamestown - Accra

On my first day in Accra we drove around to see what Accra is like
and passed  Jamestown, an old fishing village and the oldest and poorest area of Accra.
A road leads down from the lighthouse to the harbour with shops and houses covered corrugated roofs and dirty sandy roads.
One of the teachers of the local school showed us around.

I really have to make a mental switch. The weather is something I have to get used to too.
Knowing we will be here for a couple of years is definitely different from being a tourist passing by.
Hopefully we can move into our apartment by next week and will our shipment arrive from Chile with my sewing machine.

Ik vertrek!

GHANA!

Eindelijk is het dan zover!
De verplichte vaccinaties zitten in mijn armen

Finally I am leaving for Ghana!
All necessary vaccinations are taken

At the Birmingham Quilt Festival I bumped into the African Fabric Shop and bought some Ghanaian fabrics and some info about them

P had some space left in his suitcase when he left two months ago and took these with him

The distance between Amsterdam and Accra is 3300 miles
During the flight I could follow the route taken by the airline

 Hello!

A few years ago we decided not to move around with all our belongings any more but to put them in storage instead in Holland. We now travel with a few suitcases and only our bikes, kitchen stuff and my sewing machine and tools are being shipped.
Until they arrive and we can move into an apartment we stay at a hotel and I will start exploring the neighbourhood.
