Visit to the Vlisco factory in Ghana

My highlight of last week was a guided tour through the GTP (Ghana Textiles Printing) factory just outside Accra! This factory is part of the Vlisco company in Holland.

The quality of the batiks from GTP is simply the best in Ghana

Most of the cotton used for the batiks are from Ghana

The fabric is washed and bleached in preparation for the dying

The traditional fabric line is still partly done by hand

Before and after:
The fabric in front goes to the front underneath and comes out above after printing

Fabric....

The modern batiks are printed by machine and going through a long process before being cut into pieces of 6 and 12 yards for the market

Whole sale!

Ready to go to the stores!

Yes, I did buy some fabrics!
Lucky me some other ladies wanted to share some of the 6 and 12 yards ;)

Makola Market in Accra

Crowded, warm, dusty, noise, sweat and colour!
That's what comes to my mind when I get out of the car

The market is located in an old part of the town and stalls are everywhere on the side walks, inside buildings as well as in the alleys in between them

If you can manage to work your way up, you don't need to sell any more in the blazing heat but you can claim a spot in of the small alleys, like these six ladies each having their own fabric shop

Or even better like this air-conditioned shop with imported Vlisco's from Holland!!!

There is a big difference in the quality of the African fabrics, more and more are printed in China and are pushing the local fabrics from the market. Many jobs in the Ghanaian fabric industry are in danger. The local printed fabrics differ in quality in the fabrics used and in the paint for the designs. Vlisco from Holland is the best quality you can get but is very expensive compared to the locally made fabrics. Vlisco runs a textile print factory in Accra named GTP with great designs and good quality although the cotton can be a bit thicker. Next on the scale is High Target and Akosombo but someone told me that High Target is also printed in China..

Leuk weetje:

Did you know that:
it is not so easy to buy flowers in Accra and men buy their wife -or mistress- a piece of fabric (6 yards) in stead so the lady can have a dress made out of it!
The men don't need to go to the market to buy but can stop along the road and buy from the street vendor

Krobo mountain

Op zich is het geen hoge berg maar het is wel af en toe een moeizame, gladde en steile klim;

Last week we went on a hike with a group of expats from Accra to the Krobo mountain
We left the city at 6am and started the hike at 8 to avoid the heat during the day
Krobo mountain is not very high, but the hike is steep and slippery at times;
at the top we enjoyed a beautiful view over the surrounding plains

The very first Geckoboxes workshop in Ghana!

The very first Box-making workshop in Ghana has taken place!
Yesterday 4 women come to my place to try it out and they were all filled with enthusiasm!

After having seen my boxes they couldn't wait to get started and make one themselves
Although I haven't quite finished settling in, I was ready to give it a go!
Doing fun things with friends gives me more energy!

Meet my new friends!

They all brought their own fabrics for the in- and outside of the box, I prepared the rest.
Not all of them finished the box completely except for one as you can see here:

The beads are from her stash and really are the finishing touch!

Right now I have to start with a concept for giving more workshops, like preparing kits with pre-cut cardboards and a set of different African fabrics, different levels of making boxes, etc
I have to move forward and strike while the iron is hot!

Before I go, I have to share this with you:

Finally our goods from Chile arrived!
Only 19 boxes inside the wooden crate on the open trailer, so unpacking was quickly done
We used to come with a whole container...

At last I can start with my tools that arrived and the cardboard and batiks I found locally
For me this is a way to calm down after treasure hunting for things we still need for the household and the confrontation with the poverty along the streets.
I also still need to get used to the warm and humid climate in Accra

My first Gecko Box in Accra - Ghana

My new friends in Accra want to do a workshop box-making as soon as possible
so I better get the materials quickly to get them started!

Slow Sewing part 3

My African Kaleidoscope is growing slowly
I am still sewing the slow way, by hand
Although our stuff from Chile has arrived in the port of Accra some time ago
the movers are in no hurry to bring it to our apartment... :(

Meanwhile my new friends showed me this shop and apparently the fabrics I use are from here!
They sell hand-dyed fabrics as well as machine dyed
At my first visit I couldn't decide what to buy
but at my following I did!

One of these will be on the back of my Slow Sewing project

60x60 cm square

The last border is done!
Next challenge is how to quilt this one
I prefer to do this by hand, but I didn't bring any quilting threads or loop
the threads I have seen so far in Accra are simply bad quality...

Dan maar gewoon een nieuw project beginnen
en verder bouwen aan mijn stofvoorraad! ;)

I better start a new project and continue building a fabric stash
and visit the local market where you can find more fabrics... ;)
