Just a few more custom made boxes

Just before I pack my suitcases again for a trip to my family I had to finish a custom order for some teachers of an International school in Accra.

I was burning the midnight oil

Maar dan heb je ook wat! ;)
It was worth all the sweat!

Gecko Boxes workshops in Ghana

Thanks to the colourful African fabrics available in Ghana box making is a lot of fun
and the workshops are a great succes.

Something African?

Mam, can you make me a quilt? Something African maybe?
Sure! Those are the only fabrics I have here in Accra!
As I couldn't decide which ones to use I will use them all ;)

My quilting buddy from Santiago Chile asked me lately to show me a picture of all the fabrics I have collected so far... it is not that much don't you think so Patty? I think I need some more!

I cut strips of 4.5" of each of the fabrics and these strips in squares of 4.5"

All the squares are in the Bolga basket and I am chain-stitching them all randomly together.
Right now this looks like colourful bunting flags!

Tja, zo schiet het natuurlijk niet op!
Hey, this way we are not getting anything done!

Flying Birds Kaleidoscope

Flying Birds - 100x100cm

Mijn tweede Caleidoscoop in Afrikaanse kleuren is klaar!

My second Kaleidoscope in African colours is ready!
This is one of the reasons it was a bit quite lately.
But it is finished and up on the wall
Maybe a bit psychedelic? ;)

Even een paar stappen achteruit...
Let's step a little bit away from it...

Just like the first one this kaleidoscope is mounted on a stretched canvas
You can read HERE about how I did that

If you come to Ghana ELMINA is a must.
The castle of Elmina is one of the oldest European buildings still standing in West Africa. It is a testament of the dark history of the slave trade that took place about 300 years ago.

Crossing the bridge towards to fort. It is almost 40 gr C/ 104 F...

At a small terrace we cool down after our visit to the slave fort. We enjoy the many colourful people walking by carrying goods in all different shapes and sizes.

Een naaimachine! A sewing machine!

 Levende kippen - Life stock

In this part of this little town there is a open sewage system and at the Dutch cemetery the stench is horrible...

On our way back home we make a stop at a small factory for fanciful coffins.
Your greatest wish can be realised posthumously!

Back in Accra we buy some fabrics at Makola market. I quickly make a few cushion covers for my friend to take back home as a souvenir and her daughter makes herself 2 lovely necklaces.

You can read HERE about our batik adventure in Accra

And now back to my fabrics!

A visit to Atsiekpoe

Atsinkpoe village,
its name meaning Home of the Cashew Tree, pronounced as "a-tjémpe",
is a small village on the green banks of the Volta river.
This village is adopted by the travel agency JOLINAIKO

I took my visitors to this small, friendly and charming village for a day trip.
To get there we drove for about 1.5 hour by car and we had to cross the river by boot.

My first visitors to Ghana

My first visitors came by and in one week I tried to show them 'my Ghana'.

On the first day we made a tour with Miss Taxi Ghana, she showed us 'her' Accra

The peaceful and green campus of the University of Ghana founded by the British in 1948

Shops on the campus

We left the campus and stopped at this little shop selling only 'made in Ghana' fabrics. Most other shops also sell the cheaper copies from China.

The temperature went up and we bought some fruit from a street vendor

We made a stop at a small glass factory Tet Glass Beads and got a few beads

While this young boy calculated the beads the little girl played with the local kids and gave away her orange sunglasses... ;)

We continued to Jamestown, the poorest part of Accra at the coast.
Smoking fish is the main source of income

This kind man asked our girl to make a picture of him. Apparently the local people like to see her taking pictures with her camera when we feel troubled to do so

The next day some souvenirs were bought: Bolga baskets!

Wordt vervolgd! To be continued!
