Pan African Friendship Quilt Challenge Show 2016!

\
In March I told you a little bit about the Pan African Friendshio Quilt Challenge 2015-2016 organised by the quilters guild in Cape Town, South Africa. I was asked if I wanted to join and ofcourse I did! The deadline for this challenge was last September and the show was held in Cape Town last month. Unfortunately I wasn't able to go there but two friends were and thanks to them I have these pictures to share.

My center block

My 'Twin sister's' center block

All participants received the same set of 6 fabrics. With some, or all, you had to make a center block. You were allowed to add a few more fabrics. This block you had to send to your 'Twin sister' somewhere in Africa. She added a border and mailed it back to sender.
You can read HERE how I designed the border to my Twin Sister's' block.
After this we had to finish our quilts and mail it in time to Cape Town for the quilt show.

This is how they were displayed at the quilt show in Cape Town:

Also some pictures of the other sets of quilts:

African Kaleidoscope No 4

Tadaah! 'Ripples in the well', mijn vierde Afrikaanse Caleidoscoop, vernoemd naar de Afrikaanse print Nsubra!

Happy to introduce you to my latest African Kaleidoscope 'Ripples in the well', named after the African print Nsubra!

60 x 60 cm square

Mounted on a canvas frame

This was the first step in making this quilt. If you look closely you will see that I changed the green fabric in the hart of the Caleidoscope to a blue-white one, the same as I used in the border.

The backside

I made this quilt in Ghana with only African prints and it is going to my quilting buddy from Santiago, Chile. For the picture I mounted it on canvas. Back in Holland I was able to send it safely to the US from where she will pick it up next time she is there.
Yesterday I showed her the pictures on Skype, so now I can show them finally here as well.

Zangbeto dance performance in Benin

On our last day of our trip to Benin we were invited to watch the dance of the Zangbeto, the nightwatchmen, of the Yoruba people. This is a traditional dance of haystacks swirling around on the ritme of stimulating music. It is part of the Voodoo religion and by means of dance, singing and making music they showed us how happy they are with their Voodoo culture.

The tribe members are getting in higher spirits by the ritme and singing of ancient songs and drinking a bit of gin

Concentrating on keeping the right ritme

Blessing the grounds before the Zangbeto will come out

The Zangbeto are ready to show their dance

One of the leading ladies of the village

Swirling around and around...

While the music and songs go on, the Zangbeto keeps on moving around

3 generations

Everybody wants to dance on the ongoing intens music

While their mothers sing, the kids stand nearby

More and more people come to join the festive mood

She asked for a light...

And of course I had to move my feet too!

It has been an intens couple of days with many new impressions of West Africa.
Time to go home and back to 'normal' life.

Handmade pottery from Se, Benin

In Se, the town of the women potters, we visited Marceline who runs the pottery factory

Marceline at the entrance of her factory

Inside the factory

Instead of using a turning wheel, the ladies walk around the pots themselves

Marceline also showed us how she makes a piggy bank in the shape of a dove within 10 min!
